Hydroponics, what and why?

Hydroponics

A hydroponic system is growing plants in a liquid medium, mostly water enriched with nutrients, instead of soil. Oxygen is bubbled trough this medium. Read more about the use of nutrients and oxygen here. As soil is only used to secure the plant and keep it in place, if you find another method to do that, you can eliminate the soil component out of your nursery. Why would you do that? Why not just keep to the traditional methods of growing plants? There are numerous recorded benefits that you can receive from using hydroponics.

Benefits of a hydroponic system:

On growth

Hydroponics has many benefits that will increase not only your growth, but more importantly, the quality of plant that you produce. Since your roots won’t need to work as hard to get nutrients or grow in search of them, your plant will have more energy to use for other vegetative growth. The availability of nourishing nutrients, water and oxygen is also higher.

Hydroponic systems allow you to have full control of the environment. You can ensure that the plant gets just the right concentrations of nutrients and water, as well as oxygen. You can also propagate in any season, seeing as you control the conditions. Roots will have direct contact with the nutrients it wants to take up in the exact precise concentrations that it needs.

You will use less water

The water you use can be recycled and used in just the right amounts. No water will be lost via runoff out of the soil.

Less Space

The hydroponic system allows you to plant much more plants in a smaller area, saving a lot of space. You can also ‘stack’ plants if you provide a sufficient light source to each one. This means planting them on a type of shelf, that can take more plants per square meter. You will be able to produce more per Ha than using a traditional method of soil. There is no need for fertile land. You can turn any terrain into a fully functional nursery. This allows you to even operate in the middle of a big city. Transportation time and effort is decreased because you can be close to many big wholesalers or to your clients.
